Creating a heritage scrapbook can be one of the most rewarding projects you'll ever do. You are crafting a treasury of family photos that will be pored over, studied, analyzed and cherished by future generations. With a little information and some scrapbook page ideas, you'll be ready to get started on your own scrapbook!

Researching the Past

Many families have an "official" historian, the person in charge of keeping the family photos safe for future generations, but photos can often get lost in the shuffle of cross-country moves, divorces and other family changes. Gathering these photos and memorabilia in one place is the first step. Remember, color-copies of photos, yes, even for black-and-white photos, work well if relatives are unwilling to part with the originals.

Step two is researching and documenting the information behind each item by interviewing your relatives. Bring photos to family reunions; mail or email the photos or copies of them to long-distance relatives. Find out the details of the photo, who, where, when and the story behind each one.

Telling the Story - Draw a connection to the present

While the photos in a heritage scrapbook are the stars, your journaling brings everything together. Include as much information as you know-and don't worry that you might be writing too much; any information will be appreciated. Do you hate your handwriting? Lettering stickers, die-cuts can help with titles and headlines or try computer journaling to tell a longer story.

Great Scrapbook Layouts

A classic look is usually most appropriate for heritage photos, but you're not limited to straight-edge scissors and black and white papers. You can still use a variety of colorful papers and embellishments and not fear losing the integrity of the photos. Rather than trying to fit as many photos on one scrapbook page as you can, feel free to dedicate an entire page, yes, even a 12 x 12-inch page, to one photo.

Non-Permanent Pages

Whether it's a priceless photo or a special document, there are some items you'll want to include in your scrapbook without gluing them down permanently. Those photos, and any letters, recipes, diplomas and report cards can be attached with photo corners or a corner slot punch. Corner slot punches allows you to easily mount these items, keeping them in place while allowing you to remove them at any time.

Pocket pages are another easy way to scrapbook memorabilia. If the pieces are large, a diploma or certificate, slip each one into it's own sheet protector, then design a coordinating page to be placed opposite. Other items, such as small fabric pieces, can be inserted into a plastic pocket especially designed for things like handkerchiefs or christening bonnets.

As you create your heritage scrapbook, keep in mind that your descendants will consider the photographs you take today as heirloom! Remember that your family history is more than just your past-it's your heritage.

You find Scrapbooking Inspiration from the oddest things!

I've been told that the first week of May is National Postcard Week ... who knew! I started thinking how my most treasured postcard could be used in a scrapbook ... so I scanned both the front and the back of the card and opened up my copy of Stampin' Up!s digital crafting product My Digital Studio™. I selected the Summer Home Simply Scrappin Kit layout, chose to work with Page 2 and 3 layouts (already formatted for 10 pictures), loaded my Postcard and pictures, and then made it my own. By the way ... you'll notice that I used the BACK of the card! See the place for the postage stamp in the upper right corner ... Remember folks, you don't always have to do it the way people expect!

I need to tell you why I picked this Postcard. My son Chris brought it back with him from his 3-week trip to Thailand and Vietnam in 2007. He shared so many wonderful stories and pictures with me ... it was great. Unfortunately, this is one of the many things he doesn't remember much about (he's lost most memories of activities up to 2 years prior to his accident). However, when he was in the hospital last year, I brought LOTS of pictures for him to look at as he was 'waking up.' This postcard was in that collection. Chis picked it out and put it on his bulletin board as it was one of the first things he could remember. So you can see why this postcard is so special. You'll notice there's a slight 'dot' about mid-way down the left side of the card ... that's the hole from the push pin. I wouldn't try to "mask" that for anything.

With her head lowered, Ali Lamberti bit down on her lip, kept her eyes focused on the task at hand, and perfectly centered a photograph on a thick piece of construction paper.
Lamberti was creating a scrapbook page as part of a program sponsored by the Cheshire Public Library. Situated in a small room off the children’s portion of the library, Lamberti and a few others tried their hand at making two different scrapbook pages under the tutelage of Geri Dyer.
“I could sit around and do these all day,” Dyer said, noting that she has been making scrapbooks for more than four years. “People work on all different sized scrapbooks. They can go from very plain and simple to very elaborate. It’s all a matter of what you want to do.”
Dyer, who also teaches cardmaking at the library, taught the class of about eight people some techniques and tricks for making a unique and creative scrapbook page. The first project was Christmas-themed, which started with a plain heavy stock white piece of paper. Dyer instructed the class to use a roller with red ink to create a background on the paper. Some of the aspiring scrapbookers worried that their designs would be crooked, or wouldn’t line up perfectly, all of which Dyer said would be fine because each one would then be unique.
“There is no right way or wrong way to do a scrapbook,” Dyer said. “It’s the way you want to do it. That’s what makes it perfect.”
Once the background was complete, stamps were used to create green and red ornaments, which were then cut out with a special hole puncher. Also, the words “Merry Christmas” and “Peace On Earth” stamps were passed around to add even more holiday flair to the scrapbook page. Dyer handed out special tabs that lifted the ornament cut-outs off the page to provide a three-dimensional look to the project. The group then cut out their photos and trimmed them with a compact paper cutter and glued them to the page, finishing the first part of the project.
“This is fun,” 13-year-old Maggie Strunk said to Ali Lamberti, and her twin sister, Nicki.
Once the Christmas themed pages were completed, Dyer passed out yellow and rust colored pages to make a Thanksgiving inspired design. She even passed out cut-outs that could be glued together to create a turkey, and a special hole punch was used to make small leaves in traditional autumn colors of red, gold, and orange.
For whatever occasion, both big and small, Dyer said scrapbooking is a fun way to store photos outside of a traditional photo album. Dyer shared that each year she takes a family vacation and her daughter puts together new scrapbook pages based on the vacation destination for that trip. Other ideas can center around children, birthdays, holidays, or weddings, she explained.
Scrapbooks can preserve your memories, or be used to preserve someone else’s in the form of a gift, Dyer said.
“I like to start with a photo and build around it,” Dyer said, “but you can do whatever you want to do.”
As the group finished and starting cleaning up the piles of glue sticks, tiny pieces of scrap paper, and stray turkey feather cut-outs, a smile spread across the faces of the students as they looked over their creations.
“I love making stuff like this,” Ali Lamberti said.
