With her head lowered, Ali Lamberti bit down on her lip, kept her eyes focused on the task at hand, and perfectly centered a photograph on a thick piece of construction paper.
Lamberti was creating a scrapbook page as part of a program sponsored by the Cheshire Public Library. Situated in a small room off the children’s portion of the library, Lamberti and a few others tried their hand at making two different scrapbook pages under the tutelage of Geri Dyer.
“I could sit around and do these all day,” Dyer said, noting that she has been making scrapbooks for more than four years. “People work on all different sized scrapbooks. They can go from very plain and simple to very elaborate. It’s all a matter of what you want to do.”Dyer, who also teaches cardmaking at the library, taught the class of about eight people some techniques and tricks for making a unique and creative scrapbook page. The first project was Christmas-themed, which started with a plain heavy stock white piece of paper. Dyer instructed the class to use a roller with red ink to create a background on the paper. Some of the aspiring scrapbookers worried that their designs would be crooked, or wouldn’t line up perfectly, all of which Dyer said would be fine because each one would then be unique.
“There is no right way or wrong way to do a scrapbook,” Dyer said. “It’s the way you want to do it. That’s what makes it perfect.”
Once the background was complete, stamps were used to create green and red ornaments, which were then cut out with a special hole puncher. Also, the words “Merry Christmas” and “Peace On Earth” stamps were passed around to add even more holiday flair to the scrapbook page. Dyer handed out special tabs that lifted the ornament cut-outs off the page to provide a three-dimensional look to the project. The group then cut out their photos and trimmed them with a compact paper cutter and glued them to the page, finishing the first part of the project.
“This is fun,” 13-year-old Maggie Strunk said to Ali Lamberti, and her twin sister, Nicki.
Once the Christmas themed pages were completed, Dyer passed out yellow and rust colored pages to make a Thanksgiving inspired design. She even passed out cut-outs that could be glued together to create a turkey, and a special hole punch was used to make small leaves in traditional autumn colors of red, gold, and orange.
For whatever occasion, both big and small, Dyer said scrapbooking is a fun way to store photos outside of a traditional photo album. Dyer shared that each year she takes a family vacation and her daughter puts together new scrapbook pages based on the vacation destination for that trip. Other ideas can center around children, birthdays, holidays, or weddings, she explained.
Scrapbooks can preserve your memories, or be used to preserve someone else’s in the form of a gift, Dyer said.
“I like to start with a photo and build around it,” Dyer said, “but you can do whatever you want to do.”
As the group finished and starting cleaning up the piles of glue sticks, tiny pieces of scrap paper, and stray turkey feather cut-outs, a smile spread across the faces of the students as they looked over their creations.
“I love making stuff like this,” Ali Lamberti said.
